TWO NEW PHENOMENAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITES AT CONGREGATION BETH-EL:
Reverend Gershon Katz has prepared a broad syllabus for discussion of Contemporary Halacha. The discussion group will meet in the daily chapel at 8:45 a.m. on Shabbat morning until the start of the morning Shachrit services at 9:30 a.m. in order to gain insights and an understanding of the halachic issues that concern Conservative Jews today, and the halachic reasons that underpin and support our religious practice and Jewish identity. Reading material in handouts will be provided so that participants can become fully involved in what promises to be a stimulating and eye-opening experience. This series will begin on August 15, 2015 and the sessions will continue Shabbat mornings throughout the year.
Bill Surkis, former Executive Director of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre and Education Leader of the March of the living, will present a lecture program this year to include 6 evening sessions beginning after Sukkot. The series will be focused on the Jews and their resistance against their Nazi oppressors and modern day enemies. The first two lectures will examine resistance during the Shoah, with a particular emphasis on spiritual and armed struggles in the Warsaw and other Ghettos and concentration camps. The remainder of the series will focus on Jewish resistance as portrayed in European and North American film classics. The schedule and topics will be available at Sukkot. Programs will commence at 7:30 P.M.. Refreshments will be served.
