Congregation Beth-El is justifiably rewarded by, and proud of the tremendous contributions made by its members and volunteers on a daily basis.
“We Would Like You to Meet” is our opportunity to showcase the seemingly tireless members who help make Congregation Beth-El the special place that it is. Take a few moments here when you are visiting our website and get to know our volunteers a little better.
Check in with us often – we gratefully have quite a few members that “we would like you to meet”! …
Howard Schwartz, Beth-El Executive Committee
Howard Schwartz has been with Beth-El for many years and has served as a member of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, and as Vice-President in years past. In his role as an active Executive participant, Howard is a ‘behind-the-scenes’ worker for the many recent Presidents of the congregation. There are few committees on which he has not served. He is a regular presence on the Bimah and his occasional D’Vaar-Torahs are very much appreciated.
Howard was a member of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board Directorate during his career, and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of all of its elementary schools.
Beth-El remains one of Howard’s chief priorities, and his dedication and his work serve to demonstrate that fact.
David Choueke, Parnass
David Choueke is Parnass at Congregation Beth-El and a long standing member. As teenagers, he and his brothers started coming with their father Isaac, and now has been back for the last 15 years. He and Mark like to have the Congregation participate in Shabbat and High Holidays services. David enjoys greeting the people on the Bima who are called to the Torah for aliyahs, for readings in English, and ark openings. Please contact David (or Mark) for an aliyah for a special commemoration (yarzeit) . He is also able to help advise on your Bar or Bat-Mitzvah aliyahs and other participations, on that special occasion.
Gabbai Mark Wener
Mark Wener is a long-time member of Congregation Beth-El, sits as a member of its Board of Trustees and serves as the Gabbai for the Synagogue. It seems that Mark is “always there” because, he is in fact, always there. Mark is a faithful member of the “Minyanaires”, making certain that there is a minyan of ten women and men at the daily prayer services. He greets Shabbat Service attendees at the door and hands out the honours and the Aliyot to congregants at the Service. Mark suggests that anyone who may require an aliyah for yahrzeit or to celebrate a special occasion should contact the office to ensure that he is made aware of this in advance.
Assistant Gabbai Lou Schiff
Lou Schiff is a long-time member of Congregation Beth-El and was named a member of its Board of Trustees last year. He serves as the Assistant Gabbai for the Synagogue going to the Bima to serve in making certain that every word of the day’s Torah reading is accurate. Lou is a retired lawyer and brings his keen insight to the service of the Board for the continual betterment of Congregation Beth-El.
Congregation Beth-El owes Lou great thanks for his help in making us properly “readable.”
